TNA iMPACT Review.

Impact – Fight for the Right
Watching the match — seeing Abyss and Lance Hoyt made me feel like I was watching Kane and Test from 4 years ago.

The rules of the match, while creative, were odd. All these men outside the ring, fightig to get in. Then a battle royal with the men inside the ring followed. Okay, it was an odd as that old WCW event where two rings were placed next to each other and a wrestelr had to get thrown out of both rings to be eliminated (anyone else remember that, or did I make it up?).

it turns out to be a big man match at the end with Hoyt fighing Abyss. The “big boot” is not impressive, a moonsault by someone the size of Hoyt – now that’s impressive. I don’t know the names of the moves in this universe. The tourture rack-falling back breaker by Abyss is an impressive looking move as well.

I’m very suprised at the quality of match of these two big men. I was expecting a WWE-style punch-kick match. Hoyt’s Van Terminator was less than graceful but Abyss sold like a champ.

I stand by original TNA-gripe. These guys don’t sell long enough – they don’t tell a story. it’s just one high impact move after another (no pun intended).

Jarret’s backstage promo:
I heard they were turning Jarret face. Maybe he’ll come back as “Jeff J. Jarret” so he can be Triple J. Jarret leaving the wrestling scene (if he actually does that) could be helpful to TNA. Whenever main event scenes shift, it’s usually an exciting time in the promotion. Sting v3.0, Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe (possibly truly in the main event), plus the tournament to put another wrestler in that scene.

TNA’s Kurt Angle:
Even with my limited TNA knowledge, eve I know that a Joe-Angle feud is money. Side note: Kurt’s new music — I think it’s very smart that TNA did not merely do their own version of Kurt’s WWE music. The intense, pulsing music fits with Angle.

The Angle promo:
“The other place.” I wish TNA wouldn’t mention the competition. There’s no reason to do that – it always makes you sound like the 2nd class brand. I remember when Dusty Rhodes was a new and exciting “newcomer” to the WWE. The total disregard of Rhodes’ past was the WWE way.

However, when TNA gets a WWE guy, the WWE guy always yaps about the WWE. Repackage some of these guys.

Angle put over Samoa Joe? What a crazy idea. The audience always sounds like some kind of small, well behaved infomercial crowd.

Even though I’m a Kurt Angle fan, I really hope Joe goes over Kurt. Angle should be to TNA what Terry Funk was to the original ECW. He should build stars. He should be used to grab other talent from the WWE and establish TNA as a true competitor.

Damn. My recording ended when Kurt was attacking Joe.

Decent show.

To make TNA Perfect:
Fire Don West and change the set (no more American Gladiators set).

Getting tired of the WWE Product

25 10 2006

Yes, I haven’t written a post in a while. I’ve just become burnt out on the crap that is the WWE right now.

Where do I start? K-Fed? Cryme Tyme? DX? Angle’s departure? The Miz? The return of the Boogeyman?

I’m not sure where to start. Monday Night Football’s been very good lately. I was heavily interested in the Giants-Cowboys game presented in HD. I kept flipping back to Raw but I just couldn’t care. Two hours of show and generally it’s awful. It has its moments – but as of late, they’ve been few and far between.

So what now? I’m thinking about giving TNA a shot. (If you’re snickering because that sounds like a dirty joke, then you probably love the DX skits.) Impact isn’t that long a show and they’re forced to tell stories in a meaningful way in a short amount of time. Compare that to the bloated 5 hours of television owned by the WWE. They have so much time that they can’t possibly come up with good material for every show.

As much as I enjoy watching Edge heel a crowd or Finley kick someone’s ass – I just don’t think I can watch these shows like I used to. Maybe it’s because I’m getting old. Maybe I just don’t think DX is funny and they’re on TV a lot. Maybe I can’t stand to hear another Randy Orton promo, an Orton Promo (Did you get that? He repeats things a lot. If you haven’t noticed that before, take a listen the next time).

So what will this site be about if it isn’t about the current WWE product? Probably more NWA-TNA wrestling, WWE PPVs (late, since I’ll probably wait for the DVD on Netflix), other DVDs and probably specific matches. I’ll record the shows, and maybe fast-forward to something that may be good.

So the State of Wrestling is not good, kids (at least on the WWE-side of things). Anyone want to try to buy the company from Vince? Get some new writers? I don’t know – maybe have wrestling matches that have storylines and wrestlers who desire to be the champion? Crazy, I know.

I have issues with NWA as well. Many wrestlers are spot-machines who don’t know how to tell a story – so who knows how many spot-fests I can sit through? Their set looks like something out of American Gladiators with the silly lasers. And as much as I think JR has lost a step in announcing, I’d much rather hear him than Don West screaming every second. The guy sounds like a shop at home infomercial host.

State of Wrestling Wonders…

WWE No Mercy 2006

8 10 2006

Matt Hardy vs. Gregory Helms
I thought the tag team match-up would be a better choice for an opener. NC’s own Matt Hardy didn’t seem to start the show with the right pop for a PPV. The two guys fought it out like heavyweights. The top rope Shining Wizard was a very nice “Wow” moment. A Twist of Fate gets the win. The Cruiserweight championship stays with the longest reigning champion. At least these two were on a PPV. Lots of “Hardy-love” from the WWE; first Jeff wins the IC championship, then Matt gets a PPV win in his home state. Crazy.

King Booker and William Regal
Booker puts over his competition and plays his character to a T. Give this man an Emmy award.

The WWE Tag Team Championship:
Kendrick and London vs. Stevens and James with Michelle McCool.
Sounds like the Zack Attack wrote the music for the Stevens and James team. Kendrick and London fight like cruiserweights. How odd. Perhaps they could be competing in the cruiserweight division? [On an aside, I really think that the WWE should treat the divisions the same way the UFC does. Cruiserweights never fight Heavyweights. That’s how it should be.] James and Stevens remind me of the Midnight Express. They’re unlikable – the strut was a good way to get heel heat.

Someone please come up with another format for tag team matches, please. No more face in peril. No more! Hell of a finish, tho. I may have to start watching SmackDown! again.

Regal searches backstage for something.
I get it. Booker is the king. Finley is the knight. Regal is the jester.

Miz and his “Terry Taylor Starter Kit.” Excellent shot by JBL on the Miz. Is this guy a face? I got a great idea. Book him in a feud with the Boogeyman for 12 months. That way, everyone will know that it’s time for a bathroom break.

MVP’s intro is quite cool. He’s got his own entrance balloon thing and pyro columns. The suit is unique. Odd, but unique. Marty Garter – the superstar of superstars. Quite the challenge for MVP. I believe that was the overdrive for his finisher. It is one of the most unimpressive finishers in wrestling today.

WTF? They’re making matches backstage? What is this, an episode of SmackDown!? Yes. It is a $40 SmackDown! episode. Regal vs. Vito, tonight!

Ken Kennedy vs. Undertaker:
I really wish they would change the U.S. title belt to the classic one that Magnum T.A. used to wear. Much classier. The match was a slow, hard, hitting match up. A very nice brawling style by both men. Did anyone notice the Undertaker putting his foot on the rope instead of kicking out strongly against Kennedy at one point? The Deadman sold amazingly well for Mr. Kennedy. That stiff boot to the face by Kennedy to the Undertaker looked like it hurt like hell.

A piledriver?! Holy macaroni. I thought that move was outlawed. I assume that move was approved by management. Taker must have some kind of confidence in Kennedy to allow him to attempt such a move.

I am surprised at the duration of this match. Kennedy has gone toe to toe with the Undertaker for over 20 minutes. A DQ? On PPV? Yep. A DQ keeps Kennedy strong with a win. Kennedy will go on and on that he beat the Undertaker on a PPV.

Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero w/ Vickie Guerrero
Why won’t this feud go away? This match looks like it is going to be in the “Don’t Try This At Home” footage eventually. Two cruiserweights fighting like heavyweights once again. This was an amazingly brutal match with a very nice finish. It only took one ref to restrain Rey Mysterio? Chavo’s shoulders weren’t quite down, but that’s okay. What now for Chavo and Rey?

I hear John Cena is in a movie. When did this happen?

Regal vs. Vito.
The match to cool the crowd between the Rey/Chavo and the Main Event.

Regal vs. CHRIS BENOIT
Much better match! This is a very pleasant surprise. Hopefully Chris Benoit will follow up this performance with a run at the World Heavyweight Championship. It’s time for Chris Benoit to main event again. Some very nice chain wrestling by both Benoit and Regal. It’s always nice to watch a technical wrestling match on a PPV. That apron DDT spot is always sick.

This is an excellent PPV match. These guys were pulling out moves that I haven’t seen in years. A bloody, stiff, and excellent match-up. It’s one of the stiffest match I’ve seen in a while.

The Court Convenes:
Finley is becoming a face by accident. Court’s adjourned.

Dave and Bobby Bond:
These kids are like the Rock and Steve Austin when it comes to promos in that opposite kind of way. What’s with Dave’s Chuck Palumbo-like beard?

Fatal Four Way for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Batista’s got a new ring entrance thing: the helicopter spin. King Booker does not look like a happy man. Finley is coming out looking like a star in this feud. He’s just beating up everyone. The four-way match protects the young Lashley. He’s starting to grow as a wrestler and his matches with Finley have been helpful for his maturing.

For a second, it appeared as if Finley was about to win the World Championship. Batista with the Jackhammer – not bad. If Goldberg isn’t using it, why not Batista? Batista then used the spear on Lashley. Maybe he was watching some Goldberg matches on WWE 24/7 for inspiration.

Maybe Lashley should unveil an F5. How did Batista get busted open? Impressive belly to belly throw by Lashley on Batista. I really thought the Bookend was the end of the match. I was wrong. Seeing Booker and Lashley go back and forth is giving us a sneak peek as to the original PPV main event. Batista apparently buys spinebusters in bulk. Lashley’s spear on Batista was massive. I’m glad that King Booker won in a way that kept everyone strong. He looks like a weak champion since Batista did the dirty work. Lashley knocked out Batista and Finley had an all-around good match. Decent main event. OK PPV.

Raw is Pretty Awful

3 10 2006

Results from WWE.com:

Sgt. Slaughter def. Nicky
Umaga def. Snitsky
Jeff Hardy def. Intercontinental Champion Johnny Nitro (new champion)
WWE Champion John Cena def. Edge (Steel Cage Match)
DX def. Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch, Viscera & Charlie Haas and the Highlanders (Texas Tornado Match)
Randy Orton def. Carlito
Mickie James def. Victoria

I watched this episode mostly through Picture-in-Picture as I was more interested in the Monday Night Football game since both my fantasy football QB’s were active.

Anti-DX Diatribe:
The night started off with a long DX Promo. I haven’t been interested in what they have had to say for some time now. Then I caught another glimpse of Vince McMahon buried in Big Show’s rear end. Yeah, that’ll get ratings. That’s can’t miss TV.

DX then went on to destroy the entire Raw Tag Team division for the 2nd week in a row and then proceeded to put no one but themselves over. That shot against Chris Masters was uncalled for and their numerous backstage skits were awful. Did I hear a Western Showdown music and see tumbleweed backstage? I know this is a TV show, but WTF? Seriously. It also looks like when Vince is off of TV he gets his dumbest ideas. Yes, let’s see Coach and a fat stripper again. Yet another brilliant idea.

I didn’t find out til this morning that DX wound up booking matches since they threw Coach out. When I saw the Spirit Squad dressed in women’s gear I figured DX must have somehow stolen their clothes (even though the Squad was fully dressed in their first DX encounter).

The Rest of Raw:
Jeff Hardy won the WWE Intercontinental Championship in a very decent match. I am not sure I understand what the IC Championship will do for Hardy. On his first night back he challenged the WWE Champion, Edge. He’s had a decent push – so maybe he’ll elevate the title? I expect the multi-player feud of the IC Championship will be for Cyber Sunday. There’s quite the number of challengers for Hardy to face at the next Raw PPV. BTW – when Hardy put his hand over Melina’s mouth while she was screaming backstage, I thought he became a super-babyface. I had no idea Jeff Hardy could cut a promo. Maybe he is the next HBK?

I didn’t like that Victoria and Mickie James fought in the opening round of the Women’s Championship tournament. I thought they should be in the finals considering they are the two wrestlers left in the division. The Mickie James face turn has been abysmal – why is she a face? She shook hands with Trish? A video package would help before the tournament to let the audience know how we got to where we are. A lack of brackets just says the WWE is making this up as they go along.

The match of the night (except for that ending):
Edge vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship in a Steel Cage. I really like this feud. These guys really work well together and put on good matches. The video packages really built up the match as somethng special.

However, once the IC championship changed hands, I was pretty sure we weren’t getting 2 free title changes on the same show. Way too much interference at the end and DX comes to the aid of Cena. Shouldn’t Cena be making fun of these two old guys? Hell, Cena made H tap at WrestleMania. No flack for that? Nothing?

What about the rest of the rest? Like the Umaga match, Sgt. Slaughter beating Nicky cleanly, and the unpromoted PPV rematch of Carlito vs. Randy Orton. Eh. Umaga beats the man who beat Kane up for a while. Logic dictates that Umaga will beat Kane :P . Slaughter beating Nicky – there’s 5 of them! Cheat, dammit! Carlito vs. Orton – when the hell is Carlito going to get a win out of this? This would be a feud if they exchanged wins every now and then. It’s just Orton squeaking out wins and Carlito looks like a chump.

Overall – a pretty lousy episode of Raw. Maybe Angle had the right idea of getting away from WWE.
